# ZiomekOS
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ZiomekOS is a custom operating system built on top of Linux From Scratch 12.4
|
|
(System V).
|
|
|
|
There's not much purpose to this project, really. I hit a writer's block in
|
|
another project and needed a distraction. I also wanted to relive the days of
|
|
daily driving Slackware.
|
|
|
|
## Status
|
|
|
|
At the time of writing, the OS is basically base LFS system, plus some stuff
|
|
from BLFS (mostly things needed for Xorg and ALSA) with some extra software
|
|
and tooling on top.
|
|
|
|
The kernel is 6.16.1 (as specced in LFS book). The config was taken from
|
|
Debian 13, modded to match LFS requirements and drivers needed to boot without
|
|
initramfs.
|
|
|
|
The bootlader is GRUB and the OS is configured with hybrid GPT+MBR to allow
|
|
running both on BIOS and UEFI systems.
|
|
|
|
The OS boots into Xorg, using WDM. I've chosen Window Maker as the window
|
|
manager. I have a soft spot for WMaker. It used to be my main desktop back in
|
|
Linux days. Also, it introduced me to the world of NeXT and subsequently
|
|
Mac OS X :).
|
|
|
|
Extra software on top of LFS and BLFS stuff is: WDM, Window Maker, wmclock,
|
|
Archey4 and Chocolate Doom.
|
|
|
|
The OS was built in a Proxmox VM on my homelab's app server. It's been verified
|
|
to boot and work on my Acer Swift 14 Go laptop (UEFI) andHP8000 retro PC
|
|
(BIOS).
|
|
|
|
## Content of this repo
|
|
|
|
This repo contains extra code I came up with while building the OS. The
|
|
`packages/` directory contains code and resources for some of packages.
|
|
`resources/` contains non-code resources (e.g. pixmaps) used in the system.
|
|
`meta/` hosts code to generate the system's metadata by interpolating
|
|
templates. I got annoyed by having to edit multiple files when bumping version
|
|
numbers ;).
|
|

The purpose of this thing was to build a Linux From Scratch ;). Of course
|
|
there's no images to download :D.
